Do NOT bring any weapons including pocket knives.
Also cell phones, camera phones and audio recording equipment are NOT permitted in the courtroom.
There are no exemptions from jury service. Everyone who is eligible must serve.
All requests for postponement or excuse must be made by the individual who received the summons, not by their employer, and must be received by the Commissioner of Jurors more than ONE week prior to the scheduled reporting date.
If the date you are summoned for is inconvenient, the law allows you ONE postponement to a term within 6 months. You may postpone your service by calling 585-268-5812 or 1-800-449-2819 at least 7 days prior to your reporting date. Pick a date between 2 and 6 months and you will be assigned the available date closest to your choice. Any future postponement request must be made in writing or in person.
If you are applying for an excuse, documentation is required. Contact the Jury Office for information.
JUROR COMPENSATION
If employed, you must notify your employer immediately upon receipt of your jury summons. Jurors are paid $40 for each day of physical attendance IF they do not receive their regular wages. Jurors who work for an employer with more than 10 employees must be paid by their employer at least $40 of their regular daily wage- whichever is less- for each of the first 3 days of service. The obligation of the employer to pay applies only if the juror is serving on a regularly scheduled work day. If you or your employer have questions, please call the Jury Office.
All jurors who have served in a court of the Unified Court System and who are entitled to juror compensation must present their claims on or before the thirty-first of December of the following year in which services are rendered. Failure to comply with this section shall be a forfeiture for payment for such claims.
General Information
Telephone Standby:
All trial jurors are on telephone standby and report to the courthouse when instructed to do so by the recorded message. The telephone number is (585) 268-5812. Prospective jurors should call anytime after 5:00 p.m. the evening prior to the court date. Please report promptly at the time indicated.
Parking:
The main parking lot is in front of the courthouse. Additional parking is available for jurors at the First Baptist Church lot. Observe signs directing you to that lot.
Absence/Emergency:
If you must be absent due to an emergency please call our office at (585) 268-5812. For weather emergencies, please refer to the Wellsville or Olean radio stations.
Court Hours:
Court normally operates from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a lunch hour. Court sessions do not often continue beyond 5:00 p.m. unless a jury is deliberating.
Court Security:
Magnetometers are in place in the courthouse at the top of the stairs and jurors are not exempted from the screening process. Weapons or dangerous instruments of any kind are prohibited in the court building. Your cooperation is appreciated in this effort to keep our facility safe.
Meals:
There are restaurants within a mile of the Courthouse. You are free to bring your own lunch, however, no food or drink is allowed in the courtroom.
Verification of attendance:
Attendance verification forms must be filled out by jurors. It may be used as proof of service for your employer.
